                                    The American inventor, Elisha Graves Otis, developed the modern, safe elevator with elevator brakes. The first elevator was driven by the steam power. It was put into a five-storey departmental store in New York City in 1857. It was used to ferry passengers.In 1891, the American scientist, J.W. Reno invented the escalator. The Otis Elevator Company was the first to install the escalators at the Paris Expositions of 1900 and in the New York City subway system. The escalator in the Ocean Park of Hong Kong is one of the longest escalators in the world. It can carry 400 people per hour.Elisha Graves OtisJ.W.
