                                    Rabindranath Tagore is one of our nation's greatest cultural treasures. Read more about the life of Rabindranath Tagore.%u2022 Rabindranath Tagore and Mahatma Gandhi were great friends. Rabindranath Tagore gave Gandhiji the title of Mahatma and Mahatma Gandhi gave the title of Gurudev to Rabindranath Tagore.%u2022Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore was born on 7 May 1861 in a wealthy Bengali family in Calcutta (now Kolkata). His father was Maharishi Debendranath Tagore and his mother was Sharda Devi. He was the youngest of 14 children.%u2022His family home is known as Thakurbari. It is located in the Jorasanko area of north Kolkata.%u2022Rabindranath Tagore composed his first poem at the age of twelve. His first book, a collection of poems, was published when he was only seventeen.%u2022In 1882, he wrote Sandhya Sangeet which impressed Bankim Chandra Chatterjee so much that he took off the garland from his neck and put it around Tagore's at a function.%u2022In 1884, he wrote Kadi-o-Kamal.%u2022In 1894, he wrote his famous collection of poems, Sonar Tari.%u2022In 1901, he established Shantiniketan, a residential school where students were taught in open environment amidst nature. Later, this school was converted into a university and was named Visva-Bharati University.66
